Jim McNiece is a respected educator and current member of the Kansas State Board of Education who has worked to build a new vision for educating Kansas kids:
- Help students attain academic and / or technical certification for workforce success
- Focus on individual plans of study for each student
- Reorganize schools around the student, not the system
His focus has consistently been on student success, whether it’s been during his 38 years of experience as a teacher, principal and coach or member of the State Board of Education. And his leadership has resulted in increased student achievement and performance.
Jim’s tenure on the State Board of Education included his insistence that the Board conduct focus groups across the State to garner input on the role of education in the future of Kansas children. Nearly 2,000 Kansans participated through 20 community conversations and seven Chamber of Commerce events. Business groups want more emphasis on non-academic characteristics, including applied skills, and overall, participants agree that more emphasis is needed on other non-academic characteristics like social-emotional skills, critical thinking and communication skills. Jim is working to achieve these goals.
